Shady Oak

A long travelling day today , we needed to get away from Chester, as we have spent enough time there. Mind you we only did just over 10 miles whereas the old horse drawn barges used to travel the short distance from Ellesmere Port to Chester on the first day and then were down to Tyrley Locks past Market Drayton. That’s 16 hours according to Pearsons, apparently they did the round trip between Ellesmere Port and Autherley Junction twice a week, changing horses as they went. No that cannot be right I think they must have done it once a week, we would do it in 3 months as we are just wimps.

Today we did 10.29 Miles and 8 Locks

Statistics so far:-

1323.43 Miles, 838 Locks, 74 Swing Bridges, 65 Lift Bridges, 14 Tunnels
